Driver Size Calculator — Headphone Driver Area Comparison

Compare driver diameters, areas and their effect on frequency response.

How We Calculate This

Driver Area

Area = π × (diameter / 2)²

Area Ratio

Ratio = Area₂ / Area₁

SPL Difference (theoretical)

dB difference = 20 × log10(Area Ratio)

Sound pressure is proportional to radiating area at constant cone velocity (monopole p ∝ U = S·v), and reference efficiency η₀ ∝ Sd², so the level difference is 20 × log10 of the area ratio — doubling the radiating area gives roughly +6 dB. This assumes all other parameters are equal; in practice, sensitivity depends on many other factors including magnet strength, voice coil design and diaphragm mass.
