How We Verify Our Calculators

A calculator is only as useful as the figures behind it. Every number on AudioCalcs is checked against the document it actually comes from: the IEC, ISO, AES or EBU standard, the published acoustics formula, or the manufacturer’s own specification sheet. This page explains the process we follow, not a promise that nothing can ever be wrong.

The process

  • Figures are traced to named primary sources: international audio standards such as IEC 61938 (phantom power), ISO 16 (concert pitch), ISO 354 (sound absorption), AES3 and EBU Tech 3250 (digital audio interconnection), and IEC 60268 (sound system equipment).
  • Formulae come from published audio engineering and acoustics science, including Sabine’s reverberation equation, the Nyquist sampling theorem, and the Baerwald, Loefgren and Stevenson tonearm alignment geometries, re-derived rather than copied from secondary sources.
  • Cable, driver and material figures are taken from manufacturer specifications, such as published capacitance and impedance data for Mogami, Belden and Canare cable.
  • Every calculator is tested against hand-worked examples with expected answers derived independently from the source, running as an automated test suite across mobile and desktop browsers before every deployment.
  • Calculators go through adversarial re-checking: an independent audit re-derives each result from the underlying standard and compares it to the calculator’s output, and when they disagree we fix the code.
  • Errors reported through the feedback buttons are investigated against the source, fixed, and re-verified; content is reviewed when standards or manufacturer data are updated.

Verified, not guaranteed

These calculators give estimates and standards-based starting points, not professional advice. Room acoustics in particular depend on real measurements, so confirm treatment quantities with your supplier and consider an acoustic consultant for critical listening spaces. For sound exposure at work or hearing concerns, consult a competent noise assessor or an audiologist, and have any permanent mains-powered installation carried out by a qualified electrician.

Spotted an error?

Every calculator page has feedback buttons. If a figure looks wrong, tell us what you entered and what you expected: we investigate against the original source, fix anything that fails the check, and re-verify before the correction goes live. When a report shows a genuine error, the fix lands on the affected page itself, with a dated correction note where it matters.
