Stage Monitor Calculator — Wedge & IEM Requirements
Calculate monitor wedge, IEM transmitter and mix send requirements for live performances.
How We Calculate This
Calculation Method
- Wedges = Band members × Stage size factor + Extra for vocalist/drummer
- IEM transmitters = One per member on IEMs
- Mix sends = One per member (a note flags when this exceeds typical console aux limits)
- Cable runs = (Wedges × 2) + IEM transmitters
- Total power = Wedges × Wattage per wedge
Frequently Asked Questions
A typical 5-piece band needs 5-7 wedges. Each member gets at least one, with the lead singer and drummer often needing two or a larger side-fill. Larger stages need more powerful wedges to overcome ambient noise.
In-Ear Monitors (IEMs) are personal earpiece monitoring systems. Each musician hears their own custom mix through earphones connected to a wireless receiver. IEMs reduce stage volume, protect hearing and give each performer precise control over their mix.
Ideally, each band member gets their own mix send. A 5-piece band needs 5 separate mixes. Smaller setups can share mixes (e.g. bass and drums share one), but personal mixes always sound better to the performers.
For pub gigs, 150-200W powered wedges are fine. Medium venues need 250-400W. Large stages require 400-600W or more per wedge to achieve 100-110 dB SPL at the performer position above the stage volume.
