Ideally, your amplifier should be rated at 1.5-2 times the speaker continuous (RMS) power rating. This provides headroom for peaks without clipping. A 500W speaker pairs well with a 750-1000W amplifier.
Yes, as long as you control the level. A larger amp provides cleaner headroom and less clipping distortion. The danger comes from turning it up too loud — exceeding the speaker thermal or mechanical limits. Use limiters in your signal chain for protection.
Damping factor = speaker impedance / amplifier output impedance. Higher damping factor means better bass control. A damping factor above 20 is generally considered good for PA use. Most professional amplifiers have damping factors of 200+.
Clipping flat-tops the waveform, which roughly doubles the average power and removes the cooling gaps between peaks — a square wave carries about twice the power of a sine wave, so a clipping 100W amp can deliver up to ~200W into the load. That sustained heat is the main reason the voice coil overheats. A secondary effect is that some extra energy shifts into higher harmonics, which the crossover sends to the tweeter. This is why under-powering plus overdriving an amplifier is dangerous.
