Track Count Formula
Tracks = (Set Duration − Overlap) / (Average Track Length − Overlap)
The overlap is subtracted from each track because during a transition two tracks play simultaneously, so each track contributes less unique time to the set. Placing n tracks gives only (n−1) transitions — the first track has no incoming blend and the last has no outgoing blend — which is why a single overlap is also subtracted from the set duration in the numerator.
Example
60-minute set, 5-minute tracks, 30-second blends: (60 − 0.5) / (5 − 0.5) = 59.5 / 4.5 = 13.2 → 14 tracks (rounded up).
The overlap must be shorter than the average track length, or each track would add no unique time and the count could not be calculated.
Frequently Asked Questions
For a typical 1-hour set with 5-minute tracks and 30-second overlaps, you need approximately 14 tracks. With longer blends (60s), you might need 15 tracks. For a hard-cut style with shorter tracks (3-4 minutes), you could need 15-20 tracks.
Always prepare at least 50% more tracks than calculated. You may skip tracks that do not fit the energy of the room, the crowd may want you to change direction, or you may want to extend or shorten your set. Having 30-40 tracks ready for a 1-hour set is good practice.
House and techno: 6-8 minutes. Drum and bass: 5-6 minutes. Pop/commercial: 3-4 minutes. Trance: 7-9 minutes. Hip-hop: 3-4 minutes. These are averages — individual tracks vary widely.
