Harmonic Mixing Calculator — Camelot Wheel Key Matching

Find compatible keys for harmonic mixing using the Camelot wheel system.

How We Calculate This

Camelot Wheel System

The Camelot wheel is the circle of fifths relabelled with numbers 1–12. Each step around the wheel is a perfect fifth, so adjacent keys share six of their seven notes. Compatible keys are:

  • Same code: Perfect match (e.g. 8A to 8A)
  • +1 (one step clockwise): A perfect fifth up — 7 semitones (e.g. 8A → 9A, A minor → E minor). Often heard as a subtle energy lift.
  • −1 (one step anticlockwise): A perfect fourth up / perfect fifth down — 5 semitones (e.g. 8A → 7A, A minor → D minor). Often heard as an energy release.
  • Same number, different letter: Relative major/minor — shares all seven notes (e.g. 8A → 8B, A minor → C major)

The A ring is minor keys and the B ring is major keys. On the major (B) ring, moving +1 adds one sharp (or removes one flat) to the key signature, mirroring the circle of fifths.

A note on energy

Every key listed here is harmonically compatible with your starting key — the relationship label describes how the move tends to feel, not a computed score. The Camelot number does not set a track's energy: energy comes from tempo, instrumentation, dynamics and arrangement, so always trust your ears when matching the vibe.
