ms per beat = 60,000 / BPM
Tap tempo works by measuring the time between taps and averaging the intervals. The BPM is then 60,000 divided by the average interval in milliseconds.
Frequently Asked Questions
BPM stands for beats per minute — the standard measure of musical tempo. Common tempos: 60-80 BPM (ballad), 100-130 BPM (pop), 120-135 BPM (house), 160-180 BPM (drum and bass, typically 170-174).
Tap tempo accuracy improves with more taps. 4-8 taps averaged together typically gives accuracy within 1-2 BPM. Tapping on every beat (not every other beat) gives better results.
Milliseconds per beat (ms/beat) is needed for setting delay times, reverb pre-delay, and other time-based effects to sync with the tempo. A quarter note at 120 BPM = 500 ms.
