Start at a tempo where you can play the passage perfectly (even if very slow). Increase by 5-10 BPM increments once comfortable. Some teachers recommend starting at 60% of target tempo and working up in 10% increments. Always prioritise accuracy over speed.

Subdivisions divide each beat into smaller units (eighth notes, triplets, sixteenth notes). Practising with subdivisions improves timing precision because you have more reference points to align with. It is especially helpful for syncopated rhythms and passages with uneven note values.

Start with every beat until the tempo feels natural. Then try clicking only on beats 2 and 4 (common in jazz and popular music). Advanced practice: click only on beat 1, or only on the "and" of beats. Fewer clicks force you to internalise the pulse.

Largo: 40-60 BPM. Adagio: 66-76 BPM. Andante: 76-108 BPM. Moderato: 108-120 BPM. Allegro: 120-156 BPM. Vivace: 156-176 BPM. Presto: 168-200 BPM. These ranges overlap and are approximate guides.
